Babysitter Tips for Parents
Valuable lessons have been learned from past experiences, for today’s parents through babysitting, for their neighbors. Do you know anybody needing a babysitter?
The days of yesterday where a teenager could easily get a babysitting job are gone. Due to the need for safety, parental responsibility and higher standards of today, require babysitters to have more specialized skills and knowledge in childcare. Pay for such extra skill should also be recognized.

Today, there are Babysitter courses and certification available for teenagers to begin their own job building, personal experience, acquire character references and of course, immediate pay for their time and services. A few considerations that parents can keep in mind and encourage their own teenagers to ponder upon.
Use of a babysitter are not necessarily confined to the realms of providing on-site childcare for a few hours but can include acting as parent assistants. A parent may request a babysitter to take the children for outdoor activities that encourage a more active lifestyle or educational enrichment. A trip to the community swimming pool, movies, public skating, museum, crafts center, science center, etc.
A parent cannot be in all places at once therefore calling upon a parent assistant or babysitter for extracurricular activities could become a positive and new experience for our children. It should not be considered an activity to be dismissed or considered as neglecting parental duties. Even our children get bored in company of family members only. Away from home and family provides a child the opportunity to explore a new experience but also encourage his or her own personal behavior in public, alone, yet not quite alone. I hope that makes sense?
A few tips to keep in mind in search of a babysitter or parent assistant can be ;
– Age, I would recommend allowing for younger babysitters, 11-13, to watch children that are in bed for the night and in 4+ year old range, with contact information to a nearby adult for emergencies. Older, experienced, care providers preferably for infants. Ensure the rule, no shaking the baby.
– Role Model, ensure the babysitter or parent assistant can present themself as a positive, caring responsible and assertive role model. No parent wants their children traumatized or exposed to violence, bad habits, poor language, and other negative experiences.
– Character Reference, other parents will offer or recommend a good babysitter. Word of mouth advertising is a positive bonus for babysitters. A criminal background check may point out minor acts of youthful wrongdoings (i.e., unsafe crossing railroad, graffiti) one can allow a measure of forgiveness and give a chance for this youth to prove him or herself as a prospective babysitter. I would choose to pass on a babysitter with a history or signs of violent related and theft charges.
– First Aid, CPR, a few babysitter courses will offer basic emergency care for children. A parent will want a babysitter that knows and has skills to protect themself and children in their care in the event of a emergency. Keep in mind these skills do not help babysitters to understand care of special needs children.
– Back up, ensure your babysitter has contact information to a nearby neighbor for serious emergencies. Always best to have a plan in place for safety of everybody.
– Emergency, ensure telephone numbers are quickly available for safety of babysitter and children. Provide telephone numbers to local Police, Fire department, Poison Center, etc. Not everybody may have the 911 protocol in their district.
– Transportation, ensure your Babysitter is safe by providing transportation to and from home and your residence.
A parent has every right and legal responsibility to provide the best care for their children as a babysitter has every right to receive pay in exchange for their time and skills. A child has rights to be safe from harm. It is a very special and cautious relationship that can blossom into a very rewarding experience for all involved.
Parents with children of special needs may require a more medically trained professional for such services or access a Respite service. Check your community for available resources.
The internet has many sites that make information and contact with prospective babysitters available. Once a teen is certified they can promote their services by using online resources, word of mouth advertising, join or start a Babysitter club, use leaflets, business card, etc. Jobs may get to the point where some are regular while others must be declined. Excellent hub. I think character reference is important as it gives an outline of the babysitter considered to be hired.
It is a sad shame that the parents of today have to rely on outside strangers to watch over their children because the parents don't have time for them, themselves, or don't want the responsibility.Hmmmmmmmmmmm? Doesn't say much for society today does it? Both of my parents worked, but they always made certain that one of them was home for us when we were home, no ifs ands or buts, my parents were always there for me and my sibs.
Dave.
Very interesting suggestions. Thank you for a well written hub.
