Life is fast and responsibilities can be great for many people, leaving thoughts of their parents home alone, on the back burner. Can you respond to your parents in need of help?

Family is important to many people and our parents may hold the special place of honor as the matriarch or patriarch. A person to whom we refer for wise knowledge, experience or advice for the varied problems or events in our lives. Somebody we may trust, admire and hope to emulate for various personal reasons. Do we ever really think about how truly available are emergency services, for them?

Care of our elderly parents is often met with stubborn refusal and light dismissal of the idea because nobody wants to admit they may need care. Chronic diseases and the natural course of the aging process, may afflict our parents during the course of their lives, that may leave them frail and vulnerable to various hazards. Pride in our abilities can sometimes provide blinders to the true realities.

I’m not suggesting that we rush to register our parents into the nearest senior citizen home as soon as possible. I would suggest offering a alternative emergency planning idea such as a home medical emergency alert system. Ensure there is a recourse available to our parents to call for emergency assistance or provides medical information. Let’s at least be prepared, in the event they are unable to physically call by telephone or speak in person. Wouldn’t this give you peace of mind?

A excellent and basic start would be use of the MedicAlert ID bracelet which would provide Emergency medical service personnel with a list of known health issues or another modern product such as health information flash drives pendant. Medical information immediately available for medical emergencies. We’ll have one cool, modern, hip parent.

A supportive environment that promotes our parents continued ability to live a active and satisfying life with friends for socialization, recreation and daily activities helps keep their sense of personal value and worth. Include the ability to access emergency assistance helps to promote a caring relationship with their health providers.

The costs and bureaucracy of accessing health care services can prove to be tiresome or costly, for family and the elderly. A few other alternative services are being created such as free medical clinics, senior day care centers, foster homes, home and medical monitoring, and part-time home care, that can also provide cost saving alternatives. Which idea sounds good for your mom? Dad? Parents?

Hi A.M. Gwnn, I agree on all points. Elders may get physically frail but not necessarily their minds. Thanks for dropping by and sharing your thoughts. :)

Excellent Hub Dame!

You know, it kind of saddens me a little... okay a lot...

that this society prefers to either place their elderly in "homes" or shuffle them around because they are too busy to care for them.

I understand the busy and the difficult... but what a resource and treasue our elderly are.

In the old days (well, in many cultures) they revered their elderly and they needed them too.

Now our elderly are lonely, abandoned, and disregarded.

I know some cultures still care for their elderly until the end, and though it is a great challenge both physically and emotionally, the rewards are priceless.

And for those who have elderly family members insisting to stay on their own in their homes, and who can, this is great information.
