69How to Make a Tuft Rug
A part of home decor is the use of runners and rugs of various colors and designs strategically placed around our homes to add color and texture or hide a floor blemish. How about making your own rug?
Using rugs and runners throughout the home gives our home a added touch of softness on our floors, for us and our families. Rugs have been around for thousands of years and were once quite the pride of royalty for their castles. Not many have survived due to the natural organic resources that were used and quick to deteriorate over time. Rugs were also practical and useful for the following ;
– protection against dampness and moisture
– decorative as wall hangings to keep out chilly drafts
– additional bed covering for warmth
Today, we have industries specific to making carpets, rugs and runners for our homes and place of business, on a mass scale and distributed throughout many stores. These mass produced carpets can be found in commercial and residential applications and still serving their floor covering purposes. Unfortunately, these mass produced carpets, rugs and runners can be found in many other homes and offices. What about having one of your own designs?
A few skilled and dedicated artists have found and learned to create their own niche in the home decorating market, with their own designed hand tufted rugs. They are able to meet with a client, gather ideas on colors, size and shape, provide a client with a initial design for approval or changes, then produce the custom order in their own private shop. Would that make for a interesting career?
A hand tufted rug or runner can be used on the floor, bed or as a wall decoration. A tufted rug requires a hand operated ‘tuft gun’ that can be manual or pneumatic and the process goes as follows ;
– punch strands of wool or chosen fibres, onto,
– a canvas foundation with pattern design
– foundation is stretched out on a frame
– remove from the frame upon completion of tufting
– latex glue is applied on the back to hold fibres
– cover with additional material for reinforcement
– glue or sew fringe and edging
This process can be quite quick and cost effective. Fibres used for pile can be silk, wool or even fabric in favorite colors and custom patterns. A drawback is the lack of longevity when compared to a hand knotted rug, depending upon the daily wear and tear it may receive. These rugs can be made specific to size as a area rug, throw rug or runner. The design would be yours or if buying from a local artist, a unique piece of art altogether. Now if only they could fly!
