Women and War

War is an extremely heartbreaking situation for all people involved and affected. Worst of all are those that are unprotected and vulnerable that have to live within the raging battleground.

All through history, around the world, there are always battles even for the body of a girl or a woman. A term coined in a article, at http://www.rawa.org/wom-view.htm calls this "War Booty".

Women, girls and even female toddlers, in these war torn countries are kidnapped, mutilated. Her murder is the ultimate act to avoid punishment. We view sexual assault as an extremely deviant and criminal act in the civiised worlds and is punished but what about those in the war torn countries?

Sexual assault (s. assault) is a psycho-sexual deviance, said to fall into two categories (Abnormal Behaviour, Psychology's View). Either he will be a Sociopath who takes what he wants or an individual frightened by his own masculinity. Studies have shown that sexual perpetrators are in reality, psychologically weak and the act of s. assualt is a gross attempt to domonstrate to himself and the world that he has tremendous power and therefore omnipotent. Meanwhile, the civilised worlds, will see this as an act of immoral degeneration founded on the subjugation of a woman.

The psychological devastation to the survivor of such an act is not even fully realized or fully understood by people except maybe those in the helping field and affected families of the victim. You and I, most likely, walk by or interact with s. assault survivors every day without knowing it.

A redress of this particular crime needs to be developed to implement immediate measures that will provide protection and shelter for the female populace of all these war torn countries. You and I can start with a letter to our various government leaders, complete with a suggestion, that could prevent such crimes from occurring.

Todays societies (albeit not all) are held together with a collective agreement and belief in our nation's Constitutions, but; What would happen to your beautiful wife, daughter, sister or neice, if there was war here and now? What protective measures do we have in place? What would you, yourself do? Read more --> here and there

Hello Advocate, a decrease of the males in any conflict is thought to make conquer, easier. It is right to be concerned for all those affected and opens the platform for further views, I quite agree. Thank you for visiting and sharing your comments.

Many, many men are killed indescriminately through martial agression - toddlers, grandfathers and 'fighting-age' men. Is this fair? Why single out violence against women for condemnation? Women tend to fair a lot better on the loosing side of a war than men. As in serbia men are often simply herded and executed.

Hello Manas, I agree that such 'commendations' are done and people don't know the truth. There are 'crimes' done for profit at expense and specific to gender. It is a ugly and horrific truth which many are not too aware. I appreciate your visit and sharing your own thoughts :).

While I am reading the article, my toddler daughter is playing with her pet. The realization, that I am totally helpless to protect my baby in a war situation is simply horrible. But, this is a reality for so many fathers, brothers throughout history extending present in so called civilized society (e,g., Bosnia). Even there are reports of sacrificing girl child/women as trade of for family safe passage(?) (e.g., Partition India-Pakistan).

Now, just think the oppressor are treated as war hero by some people and justifies their actions as JUST and good for ultimate goal. Horrible, is't it?

Hi Bonny, I agree that some sort of protective measure should be put in place for women in conflict zones. It's horrible what happens to them. Rape is said to be about power and control but irregardless still leaves damage difficult to overcome. I would love to see that gov't provided harsher convictions for any violence against a woman around the world and at home. Thank you for sharing your comments and visiting. :)

some men will give you all sorts of excuses for why this happens in war - when this hapens I often wonder if they had first hand experience in the act of rape sometime in thier life. If not, why shy around condemning it?

rape in everyday society can be a hard thing to prov but rape in war - well it has always been accepted hasn't it, but only because the ones who it is reported too eitherhave their hands tied or they just don't care - and that is what sucks,I woudl be great is something was done to protect potential rape victims from warring individuals, but what? I have often wondered how this sort of things could be avoid, I come up with many suggestions, but on closer inspection they just don't stack up. As for the suggestion that this could happen closer to home - I've thought about that and you know what - I haven't the faintest idea what one could do that would save oneself and others. maybe if all mothers around the world united and I mean all maybe something could be done.

Unfortunately, sexual violence is considered a near everyday norm. I agree that some societies don't see it in the same view as us. Thanks for sharing, Lita :)

Yes. This is just another weapon, it seems, in the 'game' of war. True violence. The fact that it is so widely 'accepted' in war makes me wonder if people have at some level accepted that it is deviant behavior.
