Remembering an Unsung Hero, The War Dog

Christmas morning, we will find gifts under our trees and feel the joy, wonder and magic of this day. It is a holiday that is celebrated in our homes and community churches, around the world or near there.

A few of these gifts may even tumble over spilling out a little puppy with the most beautiful soulful eyes, a wet nose and waggling tail maybe even a little wet trail of spots. Our hearts will just melt and open to welcome this little four legged critter. This is the start towards a bond that will last through both our lives.

I know that not everybody is a dog lover therefore I will have to refer to the few of us that do love these canines. People don’t always understand the bond between man, woman, child and dog. Both humans and canine will enter a relationship for the duration of this pet’s life cycle of which will be quite profound. Pets can be quite entertaining, annoying, maybe noisy and smelly but provide a innate sense of comfort and that in itself is a gift that is priceless and incomparable.

Dogs have shown through history that they are indeed capable of being faithful, loyal and fiercely protective of their human master, under the right care and environment. They will view us as the alpha male and/or female. Our family becomes their pack and we are their leader therefore we have their unconditional love, loyalty and protection.

It is for these very qualities, their keen sense of smell and abilities to be trained that the military has adopted the practice of including dogs as part of their military operations. A handler will be assigned a dog and together they will go through training for sentry, patrol aid, messenger duties and detection of mines exercises. A whole military unit becomes the dog’s pack. This dog’s presence raises the morale of our soldiers and together they enter the battle grounds.

As is the truth for war not all the dogs will survive. Some will fall and others will survive injuries and still others may make it to retirement. They have given their loyalty, faith and protection to our Soldiers.

The dog who makes retirement will arrive home and be retrained. As before, some will make it through and others will not. These retired four legged veterans may get adopted by law enforcement, their original handler, a new home or euthanized. Only those close to this unique soldier will fully comprehend and appreciate the love and bond shared between them.

Want to experience unconditional love? You will find it with a wonderful best friend, the dog. I cannot imagine life without my little loving Shi Ztu, Clancey. He has been with me for 10 years now. I have learned how to love through him. Your amazing hub brought such a warmth to me. I read it to Clancey and he told me thanks to you and to send you a big kiss from him...xxxx.

Charcter...I don't think I want anymore character. I already have more than anyone can stand! My last dog commited suicide after four months of therapy and shock treatment. I could see it was coming, he had a drinking problem.
