UV Rays and Glass

Sun Kissed Glass

People like to go to garage sales, penny sales, flea markets, etc. What would your reaction be to see a variety of glassware in various shades of blue to purple?

A very interesting and beautiful hobby to start would be;

  • Start picking up some glass bowls, cups, dish, plates, etc.

  • Place it on a bed of sand.

  • Let it sit under the sun.

A reactive process starts between the glass and the UV rays of the sun and the glass will turn color. Thicker glass turns a deeper hue of color. Thin glass is light. The depth of color depends upon the length of time left to sit under the sun. Another method that is used is "nuking" the glass in the microwave. I am unsure of this process but one can give it a try.

Research has found that color depends upon the lead oxide content of the glass and others say it doesn’t matter what type of glass is used but not all glass will color. Experimentation with specific types may have to be investigated through trial and error.

Entering this sort of business is ideal for home and the creations would most likely, sell themselves. The colors can range from azure blue to a deep lavender. The final choice and range would be up to you.

One more area to consider with this idea may be that of broken glass shards. One could use the sun to get the glass shards to color. Then run them through a rock tumbler to smooth off the sharp edges. If you have knowledge of wire jewellery. You could make colored glass jewellery or colored glass window and door curtains.

The opportunity for this endeavor is open because of the slow process. The final results would be a most beautiful treasure. Give this idea a try and let us know what your experience has been. Good luck! Read more --> here and there.
