Wind Physics and System Map

The annual wind speed is a very important factor and can be gained with monitoring a possible site for a duration of time, with the use of a anemometer. This method of measurement helps to determine the energy that can be obtained for any given specific wind system installation.

Other methods of researching wind speed data can be found with information from the government, private weather stations and nearby airports. Close attention must be paid to possible incomparable data as all sites may not match your own. Turbulence also affects data readings. Use of data obtained from the RETScreen (TM) for a wind turbine system is favored. In Canada, the Canadian Meteorological Center also has data containing climate normals measured from 1961 - 1990.

Wind speeds can be greatly affected by their surrounding terrain and other ground features such as houses, trees, cliffs, valleys, poles and barns which can cause friction thus reducing the effective wind speed and inefficient power generation.

The increase of wind speed causes a increase in the power output therefore altitude is favorable and towers provide the best method.

Wind is considered a kinetic energy of moving air. The wind turbine system harnesses this moving air and converts it to another energy source. What exactly happens with this system?

The System Map

The wind turbine systems of today are state-of-the-art generators designed to use the energy of the wind and charge a battery bank to supply 24 VDC energy. A inverter converts this energy for power distribution to AC loads such as most household appliances. Depending on the use, a DC wind turbine requires a voltage controller and the PM alternator will require a rectifier for the conversion of wild AC to DC power. The parts required for a Wind turbine system installation are as follows starting from the wind turbine :

1. Rotor and blades
2. Alternator
3. Rectifier on turbine
4. DC cable
5. Safety Disconnect
6. Charge controller
7. Incoming secondary cable (Solar array)
8. Battery Bank
9. Inverter
10. AC load (s)

The importance and great value of the wind has been practiced by Man throughout history upon it’s discovery and we are seeing a revival of this popular method to obtain a cost effective and clean power source. Read related –> here and there.

Dame Scribe, this article is just what I needed as I'm checking out the possibilities of converting to windpower. The location where I live, off Lake Erie has fairly strong wind probably 359 days of the year. It's still a toss up between solar and wind so far.

thanks for sharing

regards Zsuzsy
