Promotional Value of Signature Lines
The opportunities with electronic communications and the internet can prove to be quite valuable for business. Do you realize the importance of using signatures on the internet?
Proper netiquette requires us avoiding the use of Spam or other black hat promotional techniques on the internet. A website will get penalized by the search engines resulting with loss of page rank, visibility and may take some time to recover. For some strange reason I visualize a black silk top hat but never mind that image.
The term "SPAM", as humorous as it sounds, translates to Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE) and will appear on your screen in various form such blinking banners, pop-ups, pop-unders or other commercially visual eyesores which doesn't relate to what you are looking for but is an attempt to lure you away. Could also leave malware, adware, etc. Tread cautiously.
What is a signature line? Well, it’s those extra couple of lines that we can see at the end of a email or in discussion forums. A good practice to begin regarding a signature line, is to design a few and store them in their own designated *Sig* folder on your computer as text files. A quick copy, paste and save will give your email a new tail end message.
Signatures provide a FREE opportunity to sticking up a extra advertisement that will direct visitors, to your website. The use of signatures should be with a limit or minimum of five lines or less. Designing your own signature line can be simple as mine obviously appears or by combining the name of your business, name, website URL and addition of what you do. I prefer to design my signatures as a short jingle. Simple, short and to the point. What message do you get out of my signature?
Keep in mind when designing your signature line that the point is to have it read and not scare people away. I don’t think anybody wants to read a long signature message. It should capture, hold and interest the reader and hopefully have them visiting your site. A well designed message should project a professional and polished image.
Email isn’t the only place we can use signatures. We also have discussion forums where we can add our URL. Are you taking advantage of this use? Discussion forums exist in many subject areas and can prove invaluable to offer potential customers, opportunity to network with related businesses or get noticed by members of the press. Ooo! La! La!
Setting up your own signature in your email client can be done usually through a *Options, Tools or Signature* button in your email program (names vary) and will require you to check the box to allow as the *Default* on all outgoing emails. Discussion forums are not all created equal and may not have this service available but if they do, this can usually be done through your profile *control panel*. Again, design a few of your own and focus upon the message you want to send, add your URL and save it to a *Sig* folder on your computer. A time saving practice and offers choice to change messages to avoid boredom.
One more FREE opportunity for promotion of your site will be the use of comment boxes on high profile blogs, ezines and even news sites. Again, careful in the use of your signature as you do not want to be labeled as a Spammer. Believe it or not, word does get around between site owners. How do you want to appear to others?
